New Beginnings

It’s the time of the year when you review the months gone by and measure the things you’ve achieved or failed to achieve. It’s also the time of the year when you look forward to changing some things and starting afresh, setting new deadlines and make resolutions for the next year. Making resolutions is not for me, not because it’s overdone and a cliché and I look with disdain on the triviality of making promises that won’t live longer than a week, but because if I need to change something, I might as well begin now. Waiting for the right time or even a day’s delay is all the fuel needed to burn my intentions away.

Besides, who gets to decide when the old ends and the new begins? And why do we have to use milestones of events or calendars to set targets; after all our plans don’t run parallel to the plans of the universe. All it takes is an event, big or small to change us. Dates, days or months then cease to matter. When you are being kicked in the gut it’s hard to ignore the signs. Sometimes it’s an earth shattering truth that feels like someone’s just slapped you hard, really hard, and at other times it a slow transformation that started somewhere, somehow unknown to you, finally manifesting itself like a light switch flicking on inside the brain. You see a new path that might possibly take you away from things you’ve known all your life and gives you clarity and fortitude to effect a change.
